The most important facts at a glance
The camp was refurbished in 2019 and consists of a main area integrated into the treetop canopy, two exclusive villas, and five suites. Each guest accommodation features a private veranda with a small plunge pool, a personal living and dining area, and a private ensuite bathroom including indoor and outdoor showers. The two villas, each accommodating four guests in two identical guest rooms, share a main area and also include a private, exclusive vehicle, a personal guide, a chef, and a butler.
Like the guest accommodations, Jao's two-story main area boasts strikingly elegant architecture, comprising a dining room, bar, lounge, spa and fitness area, souvenir shop, library, small museum, and excellently stocked wine cellar. The large swimming pool, meanwhile, invites relaxed bathing and splashing.
Commitment to the unspoilt environment plays a key role at Jao. While the lodge enables its guests to experience the delta in its fullest sense, it also takes into account the minimisation of its ecological footprint through various innovative measures and techniques.

The best time to travel
Wildlife viewing at Jao is excellent. Huge herds of red lechwes can be seen, followed by their primary predators – lions. Other typical wildlife in the area includes elephants, buffalo, leopards, tsessebes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, as well as the sitatunga and spotted-necked otter. Moreover, the area is home to numerous bird species such as the meyer’s parrot, African Harrier-hawk, black heron, coppery-tailed coucal, and black crake, all of which can be found with a bit of luck at Jao.
The picturesque landscapes and their diverse fauna can be explored excellently through water-based activities, including magical mokoro rides. However, Jao also offers superbly guided game drives, exciting walking safaris, and – at an additional cost – spectacular helicopter flights over the unique expanses of the delta
