Game Drive
English term for a safari drive conducted in a covered and open-sided off-road vehicle to observe the animals of the savannah up close.
Mokoro
A dugout canoe used as a traditional means of transport in the Okavango Delta. Originally crafted from a single tree trunk, today it is mostly made of fiberglass. During a Mokoro ride, one or two passengers sit on the floor of the canoe with a small backrest, while the poler poles the Mokoro through the water channels.
Poler
Trained individual who stands at the rear end of the Mokoro and propels it gently and silently through the water channels using a long pole.
Sundowner
A drink, often consisting of gin and tonic, enjoyed at sunset. Tonic water has long been regarded as a mosquito repellent – however, research has shown that you would need to drink 60 liters of it daily to achieve the desired effect.
Bush Baby
Term for a hot water bottle. This has caused quite a scare for many unsuspecting guests who, when slipping under the blanket, thought they had an unwelcome visitor when they felt the warm object at their feet. Although Botswana may not initially seem like a place where you would need a hot water bottle, it has proven to be a beloved companion during the sometimes cold winter nights. Between June and August, temperatures can drop below freezing.
