Rugged Wilderness and Massive Herds
Located south of the Nxai Pan National Park, the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park was initially designated as a game reserve in 1970 and eventually declared as the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park in 1992, covering approximately 4,900 km². In the southeast of the park, the Ntwetwe Pan of the Makgadikgadi Pans forms its boundary, while it borders the Boteti River to the west.

The river was completely silted up for many years, is now replenished – if there is enough water – via the Thamalakane from the delta. Then it quenches the thirst of many animals, such as zebras and wildebeests, which migrate in huge herds here during the migration periods from April to June and from November to January.
In addition to the abundance of life and diversity brought about by the water, the vultures on the numerous camel thorn acacias along the riverbank remind us of a fate that can befall the animals in dry times. Weakened by thirst, many of them succumb to exhaustion, this region is therefore frequently visited by predators, such as the brown hyena. This rare, mostly nocturnal species now numbers only about 5,000 to 8,000 individuals in whole Africa, most of which are found in Botswana.
Highlights of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park:
- Endless, arid expanses
- Impressive landscape
- Massive herds of zebras and wildebeests
- The water-carrying Boteti, which quenches the thirst of many animals after years of drought
- Abundance of wildlife during the rainy season
